Your flight reservation for visa is evidence, not a purchase

Kenyans move freely across East Africa and much of the continent. Everywhere else wants the trip described in writing first, and described precisely.

The United Kingdom, the Schengen countries, the United States, Canada, China and India all require the visa before you travel. Their forms converge on the same three questions: where are you going, when, and on which flight.

You have to answer while the answer is still hypothetical. A Schengen appointment in Nairobi is booked before the file is read, and the decision arrives some weeks after that appointment. UK files go in online and are decided elsewhere. A US interview date is issued a long way ahead. Every one of them wants the plan before it gives you the permission.

That is why paying for the flights first is the wrong move rather than the safe one. A return to London or Toronto is a substantial shilling figure, and the fares that look affordable are the ones with the least flexibility in them. Changing one costs a share of it, and abandoning one costs most of it.

None of that spending strengthens the file, because no mission asked you to buy anything. UK guidance tells applicants not to book travel until the decision is issued, and Schengen consulates want evidence of intended travel rather than proof of payment.

What is being weighed is whether the account holds together. Flights that exist, dates that agree with the invitation and the employer's letter, a length of stay that matches what you said you were going for. A plan an officer can confirm is worth more than an expensive one they cannot.

The applications that stall are the ones offering nothing checkable. Promising to book after approval leaves the officer with a blank. Name the airline, name the flight, give a reference that can be looked up, and there is something there to tick.

Who tends to need a flight itinerary for visa application

What a flight reservation for visa costs from Kenya

One fee per itinerary at any number of sectors, and a small addition for each traveller after the first. It is deliberately a fraction of the fare it stands in for, because standing in for the fare is the entire job.

One-way
KSh 1,950
$15 · charged in USD

One sector, one direction. What onward-travel proof calls for, or a departure with the return still open.

Most chosen
Round-trip
KSh 2,450
$19 · charged in USD

Both directions on the same page. The form a visitor file lodged in Nairobi is normally expected to take.

Multi-city
KSh 3,250
$25 · charged in USD

One fee at two sectors or six, which covers a Schengen trip through more than one country or a routing with a stop built into it.

Additional travellers on the same booking
  • Each extra adult KSh 1,950 · $15
  • Each child (2–11) KSh 1,300 · $10
  • Each infant (under 2) KSh 650 · $5

Charged in US dollars ($15 / $19 / $25). KES figures are indicative, converted at KSh 129.43 to $1 on 8 August 2026 – your bank sets its own rate on the day, so expect a small difference.

Your dummy flight ticket in four steps, no waiting

Nothing to set up first, nobody to ring, and no counter you have to get to before it shuts.

Look up the flights

Enter your route and travel dates from Nairobi or Mombasa. Availability is checked live, so the service printed on your document is one that really flies that day.

Put in the travellers

Take every name from the passport data page as it is printed there, in the same order. All of you go onto a single itinerary.

Pay KSh 1,950

Round-trip runs to KSh 2,450 and multi-city to KSh 3,250. It has to be a card — the amount is charged in US dollars and your bank converts.

Look in your email

The PDF is sent the moment the payment goes through. Order Lookup will bring it back later from your email address and booking reference.

Paying for your provisional flight booking in Kenya

This is the part worth reading, because the way most things get paid for here is not the way this gets paid for.

There is no M-Pesa option

Almost everything in Kenya can be settled on mobile money, and this cannot. There is no paybill, no till number and no send-money step anywhere in the process. If a message, a listing or a person asks you to M-Pesa somebody for a flight itinerary from us, it is not from us. That money does not come back.

A Visa or Mastercard, credit or debit

What the checkout takes is a card, and a debit card from a Kenyan bank is perfectly fine. It needs to be open for international or online payments, which most banks handle from the app or by a call. Cards tied only to a domestic scheme will not go through.

What the card gets charged

In the order of KSh 1,950 one-way, KSh 2,450 round-trip and KSh 3,250 multi-city. Settlement happens in dollars, so the shilling figure is whatever rate your bank uses on the day, usually with a foreign transaction fee on top of it.

Stripe takes the card details straight over an encrypted connection and nothing sensitive is held on our side. Card is the only route — no mobile money, no bank transfer, no agent, no exceptions.

What is on your flight reservation for visa

A single PDF, sent within seconds of the payment clearing, carrying what gets read and a reference that survives being looked up.

The airline and the flight

Operating carrier, flight number and aircraft on each sector, drawn from live availability instead of being written into a blank form.

Every leg, spelled out

Airports, dates and times for each sector, and any connection shown as its own leg rather than compressed into a single line.

Travellers named as documented

Each traveller's names copied from the data page, set out beside the booking reference and the PNR.

A flight reservation for visa somebody can find

If the mission or the application centre goes looking, the reservation is there. A picture of a booking is not, and that is the only difference that matters.

Departure airports for your dummy flight ticket from Kenya

Two Kenyan departure points are covered. Nairobi carries almost all of the long-haul flying a visa application is built around, being a hub for the region rather than only for the country. If your journey starts at an airport outside Kenya, the itinerary can be built from there instead.

AirportCityIATA
Jomo Kenyatta International AirportNairobiNBO
Mombasa Moi International AirportMombasaMBA
Nairobi (NBO)London (LHR)

The heaviest corridor on UK files, for visits and for study alike. Direct services run daily, which means a clean routing and a return leg that needs no explanation.

Nairobi (NBO)Amsterdam (AMS)

A long-established European link and a common Schengen entry point. Arrive first in the country deciding your file, or in the one you are actually spending the trip in.

Nairobi (NBO)Mumbai (BOM)

Medical travel, which is a category of its own here. The hospital's appointment letter states when you are expected, and the flights have to agree with it rather than sit somewhere nearby.

Nairobi (NBO)Guangzhou (CAN)

Business and buying trips, and study. The length of stay on the itinerary should look like the purpose you have described, because a fortnight and a season are read very differently.

Nairobi (NBO)Toronto (YYZ)

Files in the visitor and study streams. Nothing flies straight there from Nairobi. The routing arrives with a change in Europe or the Gulf in it, and that change belongs on the document as its own leg. An itinerary showing the journey as one hop reads as one nobody checked.

Mombasa (MBA)Dubai (DXB)

The coastal route to the Gulf. Onward travel is asked for on the visit visa application and then wanted again by the airline before you are boarded.

Kenyan visa applications that ask for a flight reservation

Each mission has its own reason for asking. These are the destinations applications from Kenya most often need an itinerary for, and what each of them does with the one you send.

United Kingdom

Applications are completed online with biometrics given at a centre in Nairobi or Mombasa, and the decision is taken outside the country. Your travel evidence sits among the supporting documents, and the published guidance says to wait for the decision before booking anything.

Schengen Area

Consulates in Nairobi and the centres acting for them line up three things: your stated dates, your itinerary and your insurance cover. All three are expected to describe one journey. It is the most mechanical check in the whole file and the easiest to fail by a day.

United States

Interviews take place at the embassy in Nairobi, with appointments issued well ahead of themselves. The officer is thinking about your reasons to return rather than your routing, but a journey given in specifics answers better than one given in outline.

India

Medical travel is a substantial share of the applications filed here, and the medical stream is read against the treating hospital's letter. Business visas ask what you are going to do and for how long. In both cases the itinerary is what converts the stated plan into dates.

China

Business and study applications ask for an invitation or an admission letter alongside your flights. The dates on the itinerary are expected to match the invitation rather than approximate it, and a stay noticeably longer than the invitation covers gets asked about.

Canada

The visitor and study streams both want the purpose of the trip and the shape of the plan. Processing takes long enough that a ticket bought at lodgement is one you would probably be paying to move before any answer arrived.

United Arab Emirates and Qatar

Visit visas are sponsored, usually by an airline, a hotel or a relative already there. The onward-travel requirement bites twice — at the application, and again at the desk in Nairobi before you are allowed on the aircraft.

Australia

Subclass 600 asks you to describe the intended travel and attach the evidence to an online lodgement. A reservation covers that and leaves you free of any date the department has not yet agreed to.

Centre and mission checklists in Nairobi are revised without notice, and the medical and business streams often ask for more than the visitor stream does. Confirm what your destination wants now, before you submit.

Where a Nairobi flight reservation for visa loses its footing

Seldom the reservation on its own. Nearly always the reservation sitting next to a document that tells a different story.

The name you go by is not the first name on the passport

Many Kenyans carry three names and are known day to day by one that is not first in the sequence. The passport data page is the version the application matches against. Same names, same order. Nothing dropped for being long, and nothing added because it is what people call you.

Medical dates that float free of the letter

A medical visa is read alongside the hospital's appointment letter. If the letter gives a date and the itinerary arrives a fortnight early or leaves a month late, that gap is the first thing anyone notices. It is also the hardest to explain in writing.

A buying trip described as a holiday

Trips to Guangzhou or Dubai that are really about trade get filed as tourism, and the itinerary gives it away. A stay far longer than a holiday would take, or a pattern of travel that looks nothing like sightseeing. State the purpose you are actually travelling for and let the dates match it.

Nothing on the file to bring you home

Every visitor category is asking one question underneath the others. An itinerary that only travels outward gives the least helpful answer to it available, and no amount of the rest of the file undoes that.

Produced long before the appointment

Make it while you are still waiting for a slot and it can be describing a departure that has already gone. Wait until the appointment exists, then set the travel after it.

A file that has been opened and changed

An itinerary edited afterwards, or a reference that leads nowhere when tested, is treated as deception rather than as thin evidence. That finding follows the applicant, not the application. Nothing issued here calls for it — the data is live and the booking stays retrievable.

Questions about your flight itinerary for visa from Kenya

What applicants in Nairobi, Mombasa and beyond ask before they order one.

Can I pay with M-Pesa?

No. There is no mobile money option at any point, and no paybill or till number exists for this. Payment is by card only. If somebody sends you a number to M-Pesa for a flight itinerary and says it is us, it is not. That money is gone once it is sent.

Do I need to buy the flight as well?

Not to apply. The ticket is a thing you buy once the visa has been issued. Paying for a London or Toronto fare while the application is still sitting with the mission is exactly the risk worth not taking.

How much is a flight itinerary in Kenya?

One-way comes to KSh 1,950, round-trip to KSh 2,450 and multi-city to KSh 3,250, at whatever number of sectors. Travellers beyond the first add about KSh 1,950 an adult, KSh 1,300 a child aged 2–11 and KSh 650 an infant. Those sit on dollar charges of $15, $19 and $25, and since the card is billed in dollars your bank sets the shilling amount on the day.

Will a Kenyan bank card work?

Yes. A Visa or Mastercard from a bank here works at the checkout, debit or credit, as long as it is open for international or online payments. Most banks turn that on from the app or over the phone in a few minutes. A card limited to domestic use will be declined, and that is usually the reason rather than the balance.

Is this a genuine reservation?

It is. The flight operates, and its carrier, number, aircraft, routing and times are read from live availability while you search. A booking reference and PNR are printed on the PDF and Order Lookup will produce it again at any time. It is a reservation, not a bought ticket, and a reservation is what the application stage wants.

How soon will it reach me?

Under a minute after the payment clears, whatever the hour. Ordering it the night before a morning appointment is completely normal and nothing about it is rushed.

Will the mission I am applying to accept it?

A mission asking for evidence of intended travel is asking for a flight reservation, and this is one. What individual missions and centres require does still vary, so check the current requirement for your destination before you lodge.

Which Kenyan airports can I depart from?

Nairobi (NBO) and Mombasa (MBA) are the two Kenyan departure points in the search index. Between them they carry the flights a visa itinerary is normally built from. Leaving from somewhere beyond the border is no obstacle either — search that airport and build it from there.

Does it work for an Indian medical visa?

It works as the flight reservation while the rest of the application comes together. Make the travel dates agree with the hospital's appointment letter. The medical stream reads those two documents against each other more carefully than the visitor stream reads anything.

Will they check the booking reference?

They may, and nothing goes wrong when they do. It resolves, because there is an actual booking behind it. What is being established is whether the plan can be verified at all — the test a genuine reservation passes and an edited image does not.

How long do the dates stay good?

The document shows the flight and dates you selected, so it holds as long as those still fit the application. Waiting times differ by destination, so build it once the appointment is confirmed and put departure a safe distance after it. Another costs the same KSh 1,950.

And if the application is turned down?

The fee is for producing and delivering the document, so it does not hang on the result. That decision belongs to the mission and to nobody else. What it changes is the size of the loss: KSh 1,950 to KSh 3,250, rather than fares you are then trying to get back.
